Friday night movie

>> Friday, April 04, 2008

One of the most frustrating things about the Star Wars prequels was the simple reality that any number of people could have made better movies. Any of Lucas' friends, for starters. Any number of younger directors (Kerry Conran leaps to mind, if only because Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow, despite its flaws, was so many things the Star Wars prequels weren't). Even amateurs could have done a better job.

Which brings us to tonight's Friday Night Movie, last year's RvD2: Ryan vs. Dorkman 2, by Ryan Wieber and Michael Scott. RvD2 doesn't have a plot: it's simply two young fans, a camera, an obliging tortilla plant, and a computer, thrown together to create a roughly-seven-minute lightsaber duel that puts the confrontations in Lucas' movies to shame. This is the fight that should have been the climactic scene in Revenge Of The Sith, and wasn't. So buckle your seatbelt, recline your chair, turn your brain to the low-medium setting, and enjoy a badass little fan film:

Jeez! Man, that's great. Absolutely great. Thanks.
