Cleese on Palin:

(Well who did you think he would be talking about?)

It cracks me up when the British (or folks of other nationalities) have strong opinions about our political candidates. I guess it goes to show you just how effective the widespread media circus really is.

I have no idea how Harper presents himself on tv, his views or veracity - nor Gordon Brown or Felipe Calderon. It just doesn't penetrate the average American's self-absorbed media bubble.

I suspect it's also a function of our current role in world affairs: I imagine that Americans paid much more attention to European politics before WWI than they do today. And I recall Soviet politics (such as they were known or believed to be) looming much larger in the newspapers and nightly news during the '70s and '80s.

One thing I think we overlook at our own peril is that who we elect as President does matter to some chump in Lagos or Delhi or London or Perth or São Paulo--witness the rolling global economic crisis for an example, with European banks feeling a little schadenfreude until aftershocks from our crisis began to be felt on the European and Asian markets. (It's kind of funny how we sometimes try to have it both ways--we'll act like we're the only nation that matters in the world, which isn't exactly true, and then we'll act surprised that other countries care about our politics.)

Oh well.

As a by-the-way--I was just inspired to check something on Wikipedia and wasn't surprised by the answer: I don't know if Cleese is still a British citizen or not, but Wikipedia indicates he lives in Santa Barbara (I sorta figured he would have moved to California for the work and warm weather, but wasn't sure). His recently-estranged wife and current girlfriend are Americans. So he does have a more local interest than might be imagined. :-)
