I have to preen. Excitement. Thrills. I ordered my big tax refund present this weekend and it arrived yesterday. I already tweeted it on Twitter, but I have to put it up here, too. Because. That's why.

Nikon's entry-level semipro camera, the D300S, an upgrade from my D40X, which now enters semiretirement as my backup DSLR. It was a choice between this one and upgrading to Nikon's next amateur DSLR, the D90 (the official step-up from the D40/40X). The big thing is that a lot of reviewers have found that the D90 actually processes high-ISO (in basic lay terms the digital equivalent of high-speed--i.e. low-light--film) better; that is, in low-light conditions the D90, despite being a lower-grade camera, takes pictures with less digital noise (graininess). On the other hand, the D300S has a sturdier body (which seemed useful since I take the camera on little hikes and so on), faster shutter speed and the shutter (the main moving part on a digital camera body) is rated for a longer lifespan (something like 150,000 clicks, if I recall correctly, with the D90 rated for 100k--again, I may be misremembering the particulars). That I'd be getting a Nikon just went without saying, since I can use the lenses and most of the accessories I have for the D40X. The video function is something I'm indifferent to, but who knows--maybe I'll use it to my surprise.

As the big present to myself for the year, this means I'm not replacing the aging CRT Sony TV this year again, but meh, what the fuck, y'know? I'm still fumbling around with whether I'd want an actual TV or an all-in-one multimedia computer, since I'd only be watching disc-based media anyway.

At any rate, clap for me, jump up and down; I'm excited to get the battery charged and start testing this baby out! Hooray capitalist consumer lifestyle! (I can be such a champagne socialist sometimes, I know, but what the hell?)

I'm amused that the first picture is so crappy, that if I didn't know the Nikon product box font, I wouldn't have been able to guess what you'd gotten. (grin)

Obviously you NEEDED a new camera.

Yeah, yeah, yeah... :P

In fairness to the D40X--and no denying I needed a new camera, but--I was so eager to get these photos for the blog that I took 'em in really lousy light; the last two images used the built-in flash with my hand serving as an impromptu diffuser/deflector. So yeah, they're lousy, but it's me and how much I suck more than the tool I was using....

See, you have to be very careful of jealousy between the new and old cameras.

I am so jealous. Friend with his own studio has one. He let me hold it once. Nice.

Of course he's also got several of the pro units. REALLY nice.

I had it out today at the USNWC trails; there is so much I'm going to have to learn to know how to use this, it's insane in an awesome and good way. It really is a huge step above the 40X. I knew it would be cool to have a better camera--the happy surprise is that I'm also going to have to, you know, learn stuff, which is tres cool!
