David Gilmour, "Shine On You Crazy Diamond, parts 6-9"

>> Thursday, May 03, 2012

Pretty goddamn busy today, so I'm not even going to offer much comment on this one. I posted the acoustic first part of this (i.e. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond pts. 1-5) March, 2010; Gilmour opened the Meltdown show with the (mostly) solo acoustic version of that part of the suite and then did the whole band version of the second half embedded in this post near the end of the show.

The two halves of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" open and close Pink Floyd's 1975 album Wish You Were Here but concert presentations have varied from tour to tour. Early live versions in 1974 and 1975 and the version performed on the band's final tour in 1994 went straight through all nine parts (more or less) of the suite (though some 1975 performances split the song with "Have A Cigar" in the middle); the band performed Wish You Were Here in its entirety for the second sets of the 1977 "In The Flesh" tour (the first set consisted of Animals in its entirety, albeit with a different running order) and parts 8 and 9 turned into extended, partially improvised jams; on the 1987-90 tour behind A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, the band only performed parts 1 through 5.

More than you wanted to know, I'm sure, but I obsess over this kind of thing.

Thanks, Eric. Now I have to listen to that whole damn album again. Like I didn't have enough to do today.

Turn on the black light and lava lamps, it's time to get busy.
